STAY POSITIVE!

Life specializes in placing stones on the paths you cycle through, and precisely those where least expected. Sometimes the best strategy to deal with stress is to grab a box of chocolates while waiting out the storm. But although we rarely choose our challenges, and the results often are beyond our control, we still have full power over our attitudes.

When the inevitable comes up, you have two options: lie defeated, or get up and get the best out of the situation, no matter how bad it may seems. Keeping a positive attitude does not mean ignoring reality or force an artificial joy when things gets tough. Positive thinking means making the choice to look at the situation from the outside, seeing the big picture, accept that nobody is perfect and settle on the side of optimism and acceptance. As already mentioned here on the Blog (The Power of Optimism), according to some studies, an optimistic view of life not only makes you feel good; it can reduce health problems such as heart disease, depression and even a common cold.

HOW TO STAY POSITIVE?

Of course, speaking of positivity is much easier than practicing positive thinking. For many, depression and anxiety are standard. In fact, the tendency of some people for optimism or pessimism can be inherited, so that the best way of counteracting the standard is through self-awareness. As, for example, to recognize when you are having a depressing thought and prevent before it dominates. Recognition gives you the power to control your emotions and the habit is what will make you a more positive person.

Below you will find some simples tips on how to be more positive:

Gratitude: instead of focusing on hard or bad things in your life, enjoy the gifts that each day will bring, even (or especially) the little things. Some people even make a list of small things that are worth appreciation every day.

Friendship: some people make you feel good just by being with them. Whenever possible, surround yourself with positive people, you cherish and admire you for being yourself. Get away from places and people that do not make you comfortable, no matter how close they are.

Kindness: their struggles and sorrows are their greatest assets, as they allow you to understand how others feel when facing difficult times. Have empathy. Be kind and understanding with others is the first step to have a more positive outlook.

Resilience: everyone has bad days and occasionally makes mistakes. When the storm is inevitable, remember that you are human and mistakes are what you do, not who you are.

Smile: life is full of moments of humor. Make a habit of looking at these moments and enjoy a good laugh. Pay attention to your favorite comedy, relive your best memories through pictures or spend time with your funniest friend. SIMPLY SMILE!

Respect yourself: no one can really speak for you, so set your own standards and do not let other people define who you are. Treat yourself with compassion and respect, how you would treat your best friend (assuming you treat your best friend very well!).

Some people even give the impression that to live with a chronic disease can be easy, but the truth is, a positive attitude can help you along your journey, and raise it on their daily struggles. Celebrate success, be it large or small, it can help you keep seeing the positive and great things you are doing in your life, despite all the challenges and setbacks.

Having a positive attitude does not mean that you are free from bad circumstances, not even that life will always be great. What a positive attitude means is that you know how to deal with what life throws your way.
